The BBC has launched a version of its popular iPlayer television catch-up service for the iPhone and iPod touch - the first time the service has been available on a portable device.

Users will only be able to stream iPlayer programmes in Wi-Fi hotspots, because the Edge mobile phone network used by the iPhone has been deemed too slow for video streaming. The good news is that the BBC has inked a deal with Wi-Fi firm The Cloud to provide free access to all BBC online services at its 7,500 wireless hotspots.
